(This is a series celebrating our favorite songs of 2008. No particular order. It is being cross-posted at rangeliferecords.com. If you’d like to contribute, email a song link and iTunes credit to zach@rangeliferecords.com.)

Today’s mixtape contribution comes from our friend, the painter and Fun Machine phenom Quincy Quartz.

QUINCY QUARTZ elects:

The MAGNETIC SOUTH sampler on their space: a bloomington nexus, magnetic south is an analog basement recording studio and cooperative label in bloomington, indiana

Songs:

“Surrealisten” by Wee Giant. released in late summer on an endless 3 min loop cassette this jam is lo-fi trance house. meditative and stoned simplicity from masterminds peter king and aaron deer.  good for small kitchen tape/radio players and it sounds great on a hand-held first thing in the morning. also released this fall from wee giant is an unbelievable full length tape entitled ‘wee-tow’ and another 3 min loop cassette. color: yellow

“Damaging Proposal” by Lord Fyre. solo or a duo lord fyre is apocalyptic pulsing prophetic doom. southern yelps over perma-buzz unitar. great at lunch time. color: silver

“Princess Unincornus” by Poison Oak. a simultaneous evocation of both the deep dark and bright light. the mid continent sage of forests and magick (may-jik) poisonoak leads the young into the garden to laugh hysterically with the dusk before guiding winding group floats into the temple’s vital resonation room for chanting of vision melodies.  best at night after a bike ride and quarry swim. color: purple

see also: NORMANOAK/POISONOAK’s 2008 St. Ives full-length release– closing track ‘biting because bitten’   is, for me, the most acute and subtle anthem for what is happening now as humans– simultaneously addressing the every as well as the intensely personal. ‘such a pity this party is ending’.

none of these musical examples were recorded using digital technology (until the mixdown for their spaces). copies of this music available from the artists have not ever been subjected to the digital format.

peace,
