Song: “Can’t Shake The Full Moon” by Coyote Clean Up

Song Link: Altered Zones

Hear anything new this year? Anything you couldn’t have predicted? Anything that pushed you out of your tried-and-true comfort zone or startled you awake in some exotic locale? Any full moon you couldn’t shake?

The chillwave synths and club shuffle of Coyote Clean Up’s “Can’t Shake The Full Moon” were a new palette for me, a pivot from the beat-conducted symphonies some of the laptop kids are getting so good at orchestrating. What I love about this strain of bedroom electronic music is the audible presence of the producer’s hand and the way they fuck with things in real-time that wind up trapped like mercury in the mix. Wanna hear it?

The ambient-lazer sound that gets pushed repeatedly in passages of “Can’t Shake The Full Moon” is an awesome example of this: if the song is a sundae, then these sustained staccatos are Coyote Clean Up dropping cherry bombs on top.

And as they drop they rearrange the sonic landscape. The airy brightness of the synths turns to bobbing undercurrent. The club shuffle bursts on and fades out like LED’s on a dimmer. Even the vocals, which are so emo in the verses, respond to each onslaught with a sampled-scat.

So, yeah – I got shackled. Chillwave/bedroom/glitch/club mash-ups with indecipherable lyrics are the shit! Thanks 2010. Who knew?
