Song: “Field Of Orgasms” by Pink Priest

Song Link: Pitchfork “Forkcast”

I’ve just got to get this out of the way, to be honest: an inordinate amount of the cool new music I’ve heard this year I first encountered on Pitchfork’s “Forkcast”. I think I know the reason. With so many bands, labels, crews vying for internet attention, a brand name like Pitchfork is at the receiving end of an endless avalanche of new music. They can do one of two things: let it all fly by ¬†and take cover behind their shield of brand name bands; or they can hire a slew of interns and listen to anything and everything in the hopes of catching a few gems. This year – via their “Forkcast” – Pitchfork has wonderfully done the latter.

And that’s how you wind up with a surf-sampled, Ray-Ban’d, Vap hit of Vitamin D like “Field Of Orgasms” on every playlist you make.

Like a lot of ambient music, “Field Of Orgasms” is deceptively simple. A washy sample, some warm-toned keys, stillness, suspension. The more I’ve heard it, though, the more it sounds like a song meant for Now. The way it leaps out at first, demanding to be heard. The way the notes bubble up, catch the light and pop like endless distracted thoughts and micro-emotions. The way the waves push the fader into fuzz as though they’re the ocean’s garage-rock guitars. 2009: from WAVVES to waves…

I never would have sought out a song like this, so thanks again to Forkcast.

And now, reflecting back on the year and all the times I’ve taken a deep breath listening to this song, I can’t imagine not having it and it’s gentle reminders to ease off, step back, stretch out, plan an island vacation…
