Favorite Songs of 2010, #11

(This is our 3rd annual “Favorite Songs” series. It’s a forum for Range Life friends and family to share and celebrate the songs that moved us and meant something to us in 2010. Songs are presented in no particular order. We’re posting weekdays until we’re spent, so keep checking back. Submissions are welcome! Send a song link and whatever you want to write to zach@rangeliferecords.com)

Today’s post is by Steve Swyers aka Say My Name aka The Kid. His S/T EP came out earlier this year on Range Life.

Song: “Galaxy in Janaki” by Flying Lotus

Song Link: HERE (mp3)

I picture skeezy, strung-out aliens lazily swaying to this song in some decrepit Martian Studio 54. The combination of harp, syrupy strings, slightly off-beat percussion, spacey keys, and the wankiest bass playing this side of a Victor Wooten CD works beautifully, somehow. Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but I have a feeling this Flying Lotus kid is going places.

– Steve.

Song: “The Healer” by Erykah Badu

Song Link: HERE

“The Healer” is repetitive, aimless, and proof-positive that Erykah is smoking that good shit. It also contains a great, hypnotic Madlib beat, with bells, sloppy guitar, digital handclaps, and truncated cymbal crashes, all loosely timed for maximum effect. Badu uses the flowing foundation to pay tribute to late beatmaker J Dilla and the mending power of Hip-Hop – the titular “Healer”. The track is both musically and lyrically forward-looking, leading me to believe that the current crop of R&B superstars, your Beyoncés and your Rihannas, need to step their game up. Enough of this lazy, glossy “Umbrella”/“Single Ladies” bullshit. “Say reboot, refresh, restart/Fresh page, new day, OG’s, new key…” Or something like that.

Song: “The Shots I Drank” by Hospital Ships (“SayMyName” remix)

Song Link: Stereogum

Some songs thrill, some break your heart or make you dance or tell a truth – “The Shots I Drank” (SayMyName remix) puts the Earth slightly off axis. The first
few times I heard it I kept tilting my head, like a dog being asked a question. There’s some powerful alchemy between Jordan’s bittersweet exasperation and
SayMyName’s Rain King tinkering. Sometimes I hear it and I think of Beck telling David Letterman that drinking Absinthe made him feel like he had mercury in
his veins. Sometimes I hear it and I feel like I’m blindfolded at a carnival. When the horns kick in on the choruses the blindfold flies off and I’m at the top
of a ferris wheel looking out on the dusty-gold lights of the city at night, summer breeze, half-drunk, what a woozy and wonderful life…
